When should a side window be replaced?

Unlike the windshield, door windows are made of tempered glass: on impact they shatter into small pieces and cannot be repaired. Replacement is needed if the window is:

• broken after an impact or a break-in attempt;
• cracked or chipped on an edge;
• scratched enough to affect visibility, especially on the driver’s side.

A broken window lets rain and dust in and makes the car easy to open, so it is best replaced quickly. In the meantime, remove valuables and cover the opening with plastic fixed from the inside.

Identifying the right window

• the make, model and year;
• the position: front or rear, driver or passenger side;
• whether it is a door window (that slides down) or a small fixed quarter window;
• a photo of the door, and of the glass label if it is still readable.

How we work at the workshop

1. Cleaning. We protect the seats and remove glass fragments from the door and cabin.
2. Dismantling. The inner door panel is removed to reach the window regulator.
3. Fitting. The new window is fixed to the mechanism and adjusted in its guides.
4. Testing. We check that it goes up and down and is watertight, then refit the panel.

After a break-in

When a window has been smashed, fragments often end up inside the door, under the seats and in the rails. We remove them before fitting so they do not damage the new window or block it.
