When should the rear window be replaced?

The rear window is the glass at the back of the vehicle, often part of the tailgate or boot. It must be replaced when it is:

• broken after an impact, an accident or a break-in;
• cracked;
• damaged enough to affect visibility in the interior mirror.

Like side windows, the rear window is usually tempered glass: it cannot be repaired, only replaced. A broken rear window also exposes the boot to rain and theft, so it is best to act quickly.

Information to prepare

• the make, model, year and body type (saloon, estate, SUV, van…);
• whether there is a rear wiper and heating;
• a photo of the rear window, and of the glass label if it is readable.

How we work at the workshop

1. Cleaning. We remove glass fragments from the boot, tailgate and cabin.
2. Removal. Trims, rear wiper and electrical connections are removed, then what remains of the old glass.
3. Preparation and fitting. The frame is prepared, the new rear window is fitted and the equipment is reconnected.
4. Checks. We check the fitting, sealing, heating and rear wiper before handing the car back.

Until the replacement

Remove valuables from the boot, vacuum the fragments you can reach safely, and cover the opening with strong plastic fixed from the inside. Avoid slamming the tailgate.
